Types of Gutters

5” K-Style Gutter

5 inch gutter system is usually the traditional choice that accommodates most housing needs. These style of gutters are both easy to install and are sturdy, long-lasting material. They are called K-style for their curved shape and almost “K”-like appearance. The shape of them are designed to be more durable against bending, damage, and fallen debris. They are also very popular in rainier locations due to their ability to hold more water.

6” K-Style Gutter

This is the exact same style, but with a larger capacity to hold water. 6-inch K-style gutters are able to hold 40% more water volume than a 5-inch K-style. 6-inch ones are more preferable for large office buildings, commercial buildings, residential houses, or houses with steel roofs. Another thing to consider besides house size roof material would be roof pitch, the steepness of the roof angles. The steeper a roof is pitched, the more water is falling off into the gutters. For houses with a steep roof, not large enough gutters, and heavy or frequent rainfall, a lot of water can end up overflowing from the gutters into the house causing water damage that could have been avoided. Talk with us and we can help you decide if a 6-inch K-style gutter is worth the extra investment for your home.

Half Round Gutters

Half round gutters are the older option people used to rely on before K-style became more popularized. They come in 5-inch and 6-inch options. These type of gutters are named for their “U” shape and often found to hold a rustic appeal. These type of gutters are less prone to corrosion and rust. Many enjoy the low maintenance that comes with them, along with the fact that they remain relatively quick and easy to clean.

Materials of Gutters

Copper Gutters

Copper gutters are a favorable material for gutters, as they are very durable and resistant to rusting. Their life expectancy is much higher than any other material, lasting anywhere between 50 to 100 years when well maintained. Another selling point for these types of gutters is their physical appearance. They have a beautiful aesthetic to them that really emphasizes a more classical element to the home.

Aluminum Gutters

Aluminum gutters are also an option many choose to rely on. Not only do they provide similar advantages, rust resistant, durable, and long-lasting, but they are also much more lightweight and can withstand most harsh weathers without a problem. This material doesn’t weaken even in the cold, like other lightweight materials. Aluminum gives more room for personalization, as they are relatively easy to paint over. Many homeowners are able to match the material color to the rest of their home that way, so they don’t stand out too much from the rest of the house.

Galvanized Gutters

Galvanized gutters have been a staple material to use for gutters for more than 150 years. It is liked for its cost efficiency and durability. They do well in resisting against water, severe weather, and physical damage. Galvanized gutters are also able to be painted over to better match the rest of the home. This material does not suffer from thermal warping, so it is safe during the hot seasons or areas where the weather changes rapidly. These types of gutters are easier to clean than other materials. Many contemporary homes go for galvanized. gutters to complement their home

One of the major concerns of gutters are clogged gutters. It could start with an object as small as a handful of debris. Something as simple as that can cause lasting negative damages to your home. There are many negative outcomes that could result from a clogged gutter, such as:

  • Water overflowing
  • Wood rot
  • Water stains
  • Cracks in the foundation
  • Leaks getting into the house
  • Sagging driveways
  • Landscape being washed out
  • Slippery sidewalks
  • Insects that destroy wood

All of these possibilities would lead to hundreds of thousands of dollars in repair that could easily be avoided with the proper maintenance. It is recommended to have your gutters cleaned on a biannual basis. OB Twins can help you by cleaning your gutters for you or even installing Gutter Guards to prevent clogged gutters. Even if you do not get your gutters cleaned that often, it would be good to protect your gutters from damaging debris.

Gutter Guards

Gutter guards work in that they decrease the amount of maintenance needed to prevent clogs in your gutters. They block many hazardous debris from falling into your gutters. Objects that you want to keep out of your gutters would include:

  • Leaves (pine needles, helicopter pods, flowers, etc.)
  • Debris (shingle grit, lichens, shade-born growth, etc.)
  • Small Animals (squirrels, snakes, birds, etc.)
  • Pests (mosquitos, spiders, etc.)

Microguard

The main advantage of having a microguard is that it blocks larger debris from falling into the gutter, while still allowing for water to go through properly. It acts like a screen and uses angled micro-perforations. They are easy to install and don’t compromise any other portions of the house during installation.

One Gutter Guard

The guard combines the best design and material ideas from suggestions, tips, and ideas of homeowners, installers, and other guards to create one unique guard. Here are some of the biggest benefits:

  • Varying mesh opening size— choose based on air quality
  • Interchangeable screen inserts— customizable to fit your gutter protection system’s needs
